As I’ve been working on painting the exterior of ‘Our House’, it’s brought me to do some homework, because I am considering adding shutters to some of the windows on it, but if I do, I’ve seen plenty of beautiful shutters on houses in towns we’ve been to in Maine and the East Coast to know that most of the ones I’ve seen around here in the Midwest are not properly installed… and unfortunately can look rather awkward.
The plastic shutters the previous owners installed on ‘The Little Brick Cottage’ fit into the improperly installed shutter category. The window frames are arched, but the shutters are not. Besides that, they’re not too bad… they are approximately the correct size, as far as the width goes at least, and are mounted close to the window properly, but don’t have the proper hardware with them.
Speaking of hardware…
Check out the hardware details on these shutters! So lovely…
And these blue shutters set off by the yellow trim of the windows clearly show the proper way to install them.
But, being a Midwest girl, I must admit that when I started this plan, I didn’t know enough on the proper way to install shutters, so I did some homework and found a great website, albeit a little sassy about us folk that are ignorant, but that’s OK… because now thanks to ‘The Old House Guy’ I’m not in the dark about properly installing shutters anymore!
If you’re considering installing shutters on your house, I strongly recommend reading his article, it’s very educational!
Don’t you love the acorn cutouts on the top of these panel style shutters?
And here’s something we’ve seen on houses on the East Coast…
different shutters on the 2nd floor windows than from the 1st floor… kinda cute, huh? Louvered above and paneled below…
But what style for ‘Our House’???
Well here is my favorite for my house:
Just a super simple old world style board and batten… I love it, and I love this dark blue color too…
My thinking cap is on…
I have a ton used green treated or cedar boards in the shed someone gave us from a privacy fence they took down… maybe I could use those and make my own shutters… but which windows would I be able to put them on?
Hmmm…
Have you ever thought about shutters for your house?

We have had shutters for over 34 years on our house. It would look sad if it didn’t! Shutters add a lot of personality to a house. Make it your own style…I like the idea you have going on under your thinking cap.
Personally I love shutters. There are so many choices of shutters. I think they make a home look finihed.
