Nothing can so easily brighten a room with life like flowers can, and at this point in the winter, just about every room in my house is feeling a bit lifeless.
Maybe it’s because my grandmother’s family is from Holland, and I do so love tulips, but what is more fun to grow than a miniature garden of flowering bulbs? You can plant them yourself and do the whole ‘6 weeks of cold’ thing, or do like I did and buy them already cooled, potted up and ready to start growing.
I bought mine at Rose Floral in Stillwater, MN, a local greenhouse. The bulbs were not showing at all when I first brought them home and placed them in the dining room’s east facing bay window, but they quickly popped their little green tips out. This potted bulb garden had a mixture of crocus, hyacinths, tulips and daffodils.
The butterfly came with the bulb garden, and I was going to pull it out, but my granddaughters loved it so much, I couldn’t bear to disappoint them.
It was amazing at how quickly the bulbs grew.
It has been fun to see the daily growth change, my granddaughters love it just as much as I do, seeming almost magical to them. The little daffodil was the first to show it’s happy little yellow face.
I encourage you to consider getting a flowering bulb garden growing in your house too and bring in some life to a room that is tired from the long winter. But if for some reason a living bulb garden just won’t work for you, faux flowers are so amazing now, it’s hard to tell the difference, you just don’t get to see the ‘growing’ take place, (like in my Valentine’s Day centerpiece!) so I did find that Wayfair has some gorgeous faux florals, if you want to go that route!

Fresh flowers in the house are always welcome, but never more than at this time of year. I imagine the hyacinths will be perfuming the air beautifully!
