If you find yourself in Kennebunkport, Maine in the summer, do what we do and be sure to visit the craft and art show on the green. For the past several years one booth we always make it a point to stop in is the ‘Old Bottle Sea Glass of Maine‘ booth.
The owner, diver and artist has an interesting twist on the art of stained glass. He dives in lakes, rivers and ocean harbors of New England and finds all sorts of bits of treasures during those dives. From broken pieces of antique pottery or porcelain to glass bottles and china dolls. And from those discarded scraps, sometimes centuries ago, he makes art…
like this:
Did you notice this piece hanging in the bay window of our breakfast room?
Maybe when I shared with you the miniature garden I have been working on?
He found this ‘mason’ jar, or as is stamped into the front of the antique jar ‘The Queen’, on one of his New England dives. Amazing that it was still perfectly whole. Just a few scratches one would expect with an antique jar that has been around for this long.
**UPDATE**
My mom did a little research and found this very interesting article about ‘mason’ jar production and marking history. It says that my ‘Queen’ jar was made between 1870-1878. Wow! That is really impressive. Only 8 years of production for this particular jar, and that was at least 127 years ago. I’m really amazed that this one jar, that got thrown out in the tidal river who knows when, as a piece of garbage, has survived to modern day to be discovered and made into art!
Because of it’s extraordinary depth, due to the large jar, the bay window is perfect for it to safely hang.
Don’t you love the patterned, textured and colored glass the artist chose? Our adjoining kitchen has some yellow accents, every room in our house has black accents, and there is always a place for antique blue mason jars in any room’s decor in this house, so this piece of art fits right in.
