The Benefit of Power Flushing
(This is a collaborative post)
If you are looking for a way to save money and prolong the life of your central heating system power flushing is a good idea. Here we explain how it works and tell you a bit more about the potential benefits.
What is power flushing?
Power flushing is a way to remove the build up of sludge and dirty water from a boiler and central heating system. The best firms will also strip away lime scale and any deposits left by corrosion from the pipes that feed your boiler and radiators.
It is a simple process, but it needs to be carried out by a professional. Usually the heating system is cleared of water, and re-loaded with chemicals that loosen any build up of oxides and limescale.
After enough time has elapsed, the whole system is flushed through with fresh water. This washes the chemicals and the residue from the entire system leaving the pipes feeding the entire system more open allowing the hot water to once again flow easily to the radiators.
The benefits
There are numerous benefits to having your central heating flushed. Here are the main ones:
Better efficiency
When water flows properly through your heating system, it works more efficiently. Your home heats up faster and stays warm for longer.
Lower fuel bills
This increased efficiency typically translates into lower power bills. You can also potentially save money on maintenance too.
Less risk of breakdowns
For safety reasons, all heating systems and boilers should be checked and serviced annually. However, a clean system that is working more efficiently is far less likely to breakdown, which can also save you money over the years.
Less noise
A heating system that works efficiently is less noisy than one that has to struggle to pump water through blocked pipes.
The chance to retrofit sludge protection
Once the pipes in your heating system have been cleaned you will be in a position to fit a filter to prevent sludge and debris building up again in your pipes. To work efficiently sludge protection systems need to be fitted to a system with clean pipes with a good flow rate.
Can I flush my system myself?
As you can see this process has several benefits. However, it is not a job you can really tackle yourself. It requires specialist equipment, which is expensive to buy. In addition, you need proper training to be able to use it safely.
The machinery flushes at a low pressure to avoid the risk of bursting pipes or putting too much strain on the joints of your heating pipes. The velocity of the water flowing through the pipes is what picks up the debris and propels it out of the system.
Using a professional plumber that has access to the proper chemicals and equipment is definitely the best approach. The job will be done properly and without causing damage to your heating system, meaning that you can start to enjoy heating that is more efficient as well as lower fuel bills.
