I’m old fashioned and love using sachets in my dresser drawers, but I’m super sensitive to perfumes and artificial scents. I’m going to tell you the secret how to easily make your own sachets and the tip to having them be the best smelling sachets, with absolutely no artificial perfume. Plus, I’m going to share with you a secret on how to do it really super cost effective… in other words, super cheap!! They smell so wonderful you’ll want some for every drawer in your whole house, and because they’re so easy and inexpensive, you’ll be able to achieve that!
Sachets are great to not only keep clothes and linens smelling wonderful, they also can deter bugs and mice, depending on their scent. For the cottage in Maine, which is closed up for the winter, after doing a little research I decided to make my sachets with rosemary and clove, 2 of my favorite scents, and they are supposed to be 2 great herbs to use to discourage any unwanted creepy crawlies.
I started out going to Walmart to look for some sort of fabric that would breath well but still hold in the small herbs I planned to fill in the bags once I sewed them. But lo and behold I found these:
Tip #1 Pre-made sachet bags, (I think they were by the wedding stuff) and for 10 bags they were super cheap.
Here’s a place I found some online quick just now, that are about the same price as the ones I got at Walmart: Set of 10 Sachets for $1.45. That’s only 14 cents per sachet/bag!
Why re-invent the wheel? These were the perfect fabric to release the odor of the herbs through, and they’ll be in the back of drawers… I didn’t need any sort of fancy fabric for that, I wouldn’t see them once they were in place anyway! So I saved myself the time and effort of sewing them.
Here’s tip #2… which is the best kept secret!!
You could get rosemary leaves in the store, like this one from Walmart. It costs $3.11…
Wait! What?! $3.11 for .35 ounce… That’s only 1/3 of an ounce! At that rate it’d be something like $8.89 an ounce, which is $142.24 a pound! No way!!
Nope, so here’s my tip…
Don’t get your spices and herbs from the grocery store all packaged up like that. Maybe that’s OK for cooking when you don’t need to use very much, but for a project like this where I wanted to make 20 or 30 sachets, that was not going to work.
Instead, go to your local health food store and buy the herbs in bulk!
I bought a good sized bag of rosemary… it cost only $14.29 a pound! Think about that compared to the packaged version at $142.24 per pound. That’s basically 1/10th the cost! (and the ones from the health food store are organic too, if you care about that sort of thing)
The same with the cloves, bulk price was so reasonable. They had so many wonderful spices to choose from too, I stuck with my original 2 herbs I had planned on, but considered different ones for another project. Some herbs there are so pretty, they’d look great in a glass bowl out on display… like star anise.
Once I got the bagged herbs home to the cottage, I poured them into bowls to make scooping a little easier.
It was super easy and quick to fill up the pre-made sachet bags with the herbs. (fun project for kids to do too!) The whole cottage smelled of rosemary and cloves for the rest of the day!
Once the bags were filled, I simply tied the ribbon on the top to secure the herbs inside.
Placing one little herb filled sachet in each drawer and closet shelf makes everything smell wonderful. Every so often a little squeeze and shake of the sachet will freshen it to release more of its natural scents.
So for less than $10, I made several sachets to place in all the dressers and closets, that are all natural and have a wonderful scent. They really are the best smelling sachets!
