Ceiling Treatments: The 5th Wall

Designers frequently refer to the ceiling as ‘the 5th wall’, meaning it is as important to consider when decorating a room as the actual wall colors and treatments are.

So… have you? Have you considered your ceiling treatment? I’m going to show you some ceiling treatments that hopefully will inspire you to start thinking about your own ceilings and consider what they need to finish the room. Read the rest of this entry

Powder Room Renovation

title page

After we first bought our 100 year old house and started to renovate it a little over a year ago, it had a very spacious powder room on the main floor, but everything about that powder room was a problem! I designed a new floor plan to actually make the powder room smaller in order to make it much more effiecient and function so much better!

Take a look at the original floor plan: Read the rest of this entry

Interior Details of the 7 Barn House

A couple of weeks ago, we had the wonderful pleasure of being invited up to stay at this magnificent place that sits on the South shore of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin.

It’s a house, that looks like a barn, and was constructed by repurposing the wood, beams and materials from 7 antique barns.

Last time I showed you some amazingly creative lights that are in the house… this time I want to show you some more of the gorgeous, rustic details of this place! click here to read the rest of the story…

A Little Getaway at a Gorgeous Victorian B&B

We recently were given an amazingly generous gift package from our son and daughter-in-law to a B&B in Stillwater, MN at The Rivertown Inn.

(This is the ‘wallpaper’ in the dining room… They had an artist somehow photocopy or reproduce a painting onto large canvases and then hung that canvas on the wall like wallpaper, and then embellish it by hand with paint. It looks amazing in person, like a huge oil painting on the walls!)

A little about the history of Stillwater, the oldest town in Minnesota, it is a picturesque town sitting on the St. Croix River across from Wisconsin and absolutely filled with Victorian homes and mansions, amazing shops with tons of choices for antiquing. It’s for sure a destination town and well worth the trip.

And the place we stayed, The Rivertown Inn, was over the top in opulence and décor! The amazing attention to detail with no expense spared for this antique B&B is remarkable. High end finishes throughout, both inside and outside… click here to read the rest of the story…

Why a Roman Shade with Cafe Panels was the Right Choice

The other day I showed you the ‘Anthropologie’ inspired bathroom. In that room we made a roman shade with coordinating café panels.

By cleverly mounting the roman shade way above the actual top of the window trim, it instantly tricks the eye into believing the window is larger! (I am always amazed with that trick!) click here to read the rest of the story

Someone Else’s House: Bungalow Bathroom, Almost Anthropologie Style?

Continuing the tour of the refreshed and somewhat renovated c. 1916 bungalow, (or there abouts,) our young couple has purchased, the bathroom is the room to see today.

This room started in pretty good condition:

The walls, however, were a shocking yellow. I think the previous homeowner was trying to coordinate with the floor tile, but instead the result was quite harsh.

Although the mechanics of the room was fairly solid, our young couple really didn’t care for some things in the bathroom.

First, as what so frequently happens in older homes over the years, the bathrooms and kitchens during the ‘updating process’ lose their original trim and character. Which is exactly what happened to this room, it had, at some time in the past, been updated, and in that process, the original trim was removed and replaced with ranch molding.

Another thing our couple just wasn’t sure about, was the floor tile. Although it was in excellent condition, it just seemed to scream a little too loud.

After considering ripping out the tile, but given the budget, and encouragement from others to keep it because it had an ‘Anthropologie’ look to it, the new homeowners instead decided to add back in some of the missing character and see if then the tiles would feel more at home in the new setting.

And here are the results of their hard work and creativity: click here to read the rest of the story

Master Bedroom, Pottery Barn Linens, Just Not a Messy Bed

I’ve been sort of delaying getting the master bedroom revealed on this blog. Mostly because I’ve really been struggling with making the pictures look as good as the room looks in real life. For some reason, I can’t get a good angle with the bed, either it looks huge, or it looks messy. And then this week I got the Pottery Barn catalogue in the mail and the bedroom pic, that by the way, looked great… of course, had bed linens that were slightly messy.

Source: Pottery Barn

Doesn’t that bed above from Pottery Barn look great? Yeah, I tried to embrace the ‘messy’ bed look. I wasn’t happy with that picture either. And the toile printed linens I have, even came from Pottery Barn. (maybe I just lack the guts to pull that messy look off, Ha! after all, what if you thought that since I posted pics of my bed messy, you thought that was how I normally kept it? Gasp!)

So instead I tried to get the same angle and closeness of the bed as Pottery Barn did… Read More of the Story…
