Creating a Verdigris Faux Finish on Pressed Tin Tile

Part of moving to a new, albeit 100 year old house, is figuring out what existing furniture will work in the new setting. With our recent move, I have been ‘fine tuning’ some of those pieces even a little more… and creating a new verdigris faux finish on the antique tin tile was breathing new life and a new purpose into an existing piece from our former house. Here’s why and how I did this verdigris faux finish…

Ceiling Treatments: The 5th Wall

Designers frequently refer to the ceiling as ‘the 5th wall’, meaning it is as important to consider when decorating a room as the actual wall colors and treatments are.

So… have you? Have you considered your ceiling treatment? I’m going to show you some ceiling treatments that hopefully will inspire you to start thinking about your own ceilings and consider what they need to finish the room. Read the rest of this entry

Front Entry Before and After, Part 1

First impressions.

There are a few sayings about first impressions. There’s the one about only being able make a first impression once. And I recently read another about how you should trust the very first impression you get when meeting someone… I’m not sure about that, but if that was the case with our new 100 year old house, well, YIKES! is all I can say. Our House: A Single Vintage Tin Ceiling Tile in the Kitchen

My friend was having a barn sale and had some pieces of a tin tile ceiling for sale.

I bought one and here’s what I did with it:

I repurposed it, and now use it for a click here to read the rest of the story…

Someone Else’s House: Bungalow Bathroom, Almost Anthropologie Style?

Continuing the tour of the refreshed and somewhat renovated c. 1916 bungalow, (or there abouts,) our young couple has purchased, the bathroom is the room to see today.

This room started in pretty good condition:

The walls, however, were a shocking yellow. I think the previous homeowner was trying to coordinate with the floor tile, but instead the result was quite harsh.

Although the mechanics of the room was fairly solid, our young couple really didn’t care for some things in the bathroom.

First, as what so frequently happens in older homes over the years, the bathrooms and kitchens during the ‘updating process’ lose their original trim and character. Which is exactly what happened to this room, it had, at some time in the past, been updated, and in that process, the original trim was removed and replaced with ranch molding.

Another thing our couple just wasn’t sure about, was the floor tile. Although it was in excellent condition, it just seemed to scream a little too loud.

After considering ripping out the tile, but given the budget, and encouragement from others to keep it because it had an ‘Anthropologie’ look to it, the new homeowners instead decided to add back in some of the missing character and see if then the tiles would feel more at home in the new setting.

And here are the results of their hard work and creativity: click here to read the rest of the story

Little Brick Cottage… Bathroom total Revamp, Rehaul, Re-Do, you mention it, we RE-did it!

Do you remember what the bathroom in the ‘Little Brick Cottage’ was when we first bought this charming home a few short months ago?

Well, we have completely gutted, overhauled, re-plumbed, rewired and revamped it since then! Now, you actually want to enter into the bathroom, before… not so much.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the before and after.

Even though the window was replaced with a new double pane window, it’s in the exact spot in the after pic as in the before pic. Just about everything else in the bathroom was moved to create a new floor plan though. Read on…

Lightening Up the Living Room: Change out a Table and a Lamp…

When I decide to change up a room, I’ve learned how to turn on my ‘critical eye’. In other words, I try to see the space as a neutral party, not swayed by what I love in it, but really trying to allow myself to consider all the possibilities.

So with that opening, you’re probably thinking I’ve gone and done some huge dramatic change in the living room, but not really. The reason I bring that up is because I know how easy it is to actually get stuck in ‘a box’ because at some previous time you found just the right piece for a certain place…I just need to remember that just like in life, the same goes in decorating as well, just because something was right for a time, doesn’t mean it will be the right thing forever.

Case in point:

(Yes, I know this is a picture of the dining room and I’m supposed to be writing about the living room…I’ll get there.) Read on…

Closing the Master Bathroom tour with the 2nd Vanity and Shower Details

This is the last chapter in the master bathroom tour from “Our House”. Previously I told you how we ‘stole’ space from the existing walk-in closet to create room for my husband’s vanity and our walk-in shower.

Approximately where the corner of the wall is on the right is where previously that wall went across Read on…
